School Food Standards
Both our conversations with the Department for Education and recent answers to PQs have shown that limited progress has been made on the revisions to the School Food Standards for England: at present, the Department for Education are still attempting to define the timeline of the process. The new Healthy Rating Scheme for primary schools is also delayed. However, as a registered stakeholder, the Alliance is well-placed to contribute to these projects when possible. We are also continuing to chase for an update on the Ofsted review of sports and nutrition in schools.
We have also written to the Department for Education to request to discuss the idea of school milk receiving support from the proceeds of the sugar levy. The response we received was non-committal, but they were happy to meet to discuss this and other issues later in the year.
Additionally, the Scottish government has begun a review of the country’s own school food regulations. We have written to Education Scotland highlighting the importance of daily milk provisions, and will make a more detailed submission once the formal consultation on the planned changes begins.
